(AROLAND FIRST NATION, ON) – During the morning of April 14, 2017 members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Greenstone Detachment was called to an Aroland First Nations residence to investigate an incident involving a possible injured male. The male was transported by ambulance for medical treatment, but despite medical intervention, Byron MESHAKE (30 years of age) of Aroland First Nations was pronounced deceased.
Police have charged Jeffrie MATASAWAGON (26 years of age) of Aroland First Nations with Assault with a Weapon contrary to Section 267(a) of the Criminal Code.
Officers with the Nishinawbe-Aski Police Service, Greenstone OPP Detachment and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Northwest Region Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Peter LOREE of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
A post mortem examination is pending.
