(TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) – On June 23, 2017, at approximately 4:40 p.m. members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting Marine Patrol on Belwood Lake, Township of Centre Wellington. While patrolling westbound in the middle of the lake police observed two personal watercrafts travelling at a high rate of speed from over 300 metres away.
The vessels approached the police boat head on and appeared to be approximately two – three metres apart from each other. Police started to wave frantically to get the attention of the operators believing there would be a collision. One vessel veered to the left narrowly avoiding a collision and continued. The other vessel veered to the right approximately 2 metres in front of the police while revving his engine. This resulted in one of the officers being showered with water inside the police vessel.
Police immediately directed the operators to stop their personal watercrafts. Upon interaction with the operators, Police formed the opinion that they had consumed alcohol. Both operators were pulled to the closest dock where a roadside screening test was conducted. In both cases, they resulted in a fail.
The operators were arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.
