Man suffering from gunshot wounds leads to discovery of second crime scene, deceased woman found


On Monday, May 23, 2017, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police responded to a call for a man who had been shot in the Cavell Avenue/Pape Avenue area.

It is reported that:

  • emergency services located a man in the Gerrard Street East/Logan Avenue area with gunshot wounds
  • he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced
  • while investigating the crime scene, a second crime scene was discovered at 96 Cavell Avenue
  • at this second crime scene, police found a deceased woman

The man has been identified as Abdiqani Abshir, 24, of Toronto. A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound.

The investigation into the woman’s death is ongoing. Her identity will not be released at this time.

On Wednesday, August 30, 2017, police announced that the woman located inside 96 Cavell Avenue has now been identified as Joanne Colley, 59, of Toronto.

In consultation with the office of the Coroner, her death has now been ruled a homicide and numbered as #31 for 2017.
