On August 1, 2017, detectives from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 2 District Niagara Falls Street Crime Unit (SCU) observed a wanted man driving a stolen car in the City of Niagara Falls.

The man had previously issued arrest warrants for:

  • Failing to Appear for Court (x2)
  • Failing to Comply with a Probation Order
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle

More recently the man was wanted by the NRPS from an incident that had occurred on July 20, 2017, where it is alleged that while driving a stolen car he smashed into a marked NRPS cruiser and then lead officers on a pursuit.

As a result of that incident the man was wanted for the offences of:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Fail to Stop at Accident Scene
  • Driving While Disqualified
  • Fail to Comply with a Recognizance Order

On August 1, 2017, SCU detectives conducted surveillance of the man trying determining a location to conduct the arrest, while negating the risk to the public of another pursuit.  At approximately 1:40PM the man attended a local fast food restaurant in the area of Stanley Avenue and Kitchener Street.  SCU detectives took the opportunity to block in the stolen car.  The wanted man fled on foot running west bound.  A 2 District uniform patrol officer in the area engaged in a foot pursuit and was able to arrest the wanted man in the area of Kitchener Street and Temperance Avenue.

There was no damage to the involved NRPS vehicles or the stolen car.

Ken Hunter (24 years) of Niagara Falls is charged with the following additional offences stemming from his August 1st arrest:

  • Driving While Disqualified
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance, (Methamphetamine) for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance, (Diacetylmorphine) for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
  • Possession of Break and Enter Tools
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with a Recognizance Order

Hunter was transported to the NRPS Central Holding Unit in Niagara Falls, where he was held for a bail hearing on August 2, 2017 at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.
