Pickering residents return home to threatening homophobic hate graffiti on their garage

Police are investigating a hate-related incident after graffiti with a threatening message and homophobic slur was found spray painted on the outside of a home in north Pickering.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at approximately 5:45 p.m., residents on Highway 7 near North Road returned home and found a hateful message sprayed on the back of their garage. The message contained a homophobic slur and stated “Time to Move. 30 Days.”

The residents called police to report the graffiti. Police are investigating this as a hate-related incident.

The graffiti occurred sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1. Investigators are appealing to the public who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at that time to call police.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Det. van Rooy of the West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2530.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
