On Thursday, September 7, 2017, residents from a multi-unit apartment building on Colborne Street contacted police to report a suspicious woman attending the building and stealing money from residents.

A Community Patrol Officer attended and listened to the concerns of several residences regarding an unknown suspicious female who had been frequenting the building. The Officer learned that on September 6, 2017 at around 6:30 p.m. the accused entered an unlocked door and entered the apartment of victim #1. Victim #1, a 71 year old woman heard a noise and observed an unknown woman in her living room near her purse and holding $30.00 cash. The victim asked the woman what she was doing, and the female who was wearing clothing that looked like a medical uniform advised that she was dropping off medication for another person. The victim advised that no one by that name lived there, and then asked the female about the money she was holding. The woman advised she had taken it from the victim’s purse in order to pay for the medication. The woman (accused) put down the cash and fled the apartment. The Officer canvassed the apartment building speaking to other neighbours and gathered information regarding the suspect.

The Officer spoke with residents regarding home security and personal safety. During the investigation the Officer learned that another residence in the building had reported a theft of money involving the same female back on May 24, 2017. On that occasion the accused knocked on the door of victim #2, a 70 year old woman and asked if she could use her telephone. The accused explained that she lived in the building, but had forgotten her keys. The victim invited the accused in for a short while and, during this time; the accused stole approximately $40 in cash from the victim. At the time of the original report the woman was unidentified. As a result of the investigation the officer identified the accused and on September 7, 2017 shortly before 5:30 p.m. the accused was arrested without incident.

Shelly May WESTCOTT, 45 years of age is charged with the following offences; Break and Enter and Commit and Theft under $5,000.00. The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and Undertaking with a future court date.
