A desire for a basketball has a Milton Youth facing a robbery charge and a father/son duo facing assault charges.
On Thursday, August 31, 2017 at approximately 4:48pm, Halton Regional Police responded to the area of Thompson Road and Louis St. Laurent Avenue in Milton after multiple 911 callers reported seeing a male with a firearm.
At 4:48pm calls started pouring in to Halton Police about a male with a gun being chased by a male in a suit and another male. Halton Police flooded the area and located the parties who were all subsequently arrested without incident.
The follow up investigation revealed that earlier in the afternoon, two young 15 year old males had been playing basketball at a park just north of Thompson Rd and Louis St. Laurent Avenue in Milton. Another young male (the 15 year old accused) approached and asked several times for their basketball. The males declined to hand over the basketball and that’s when the accused pulled out a handgun from his backpack. The kids wisely obliged and handed the ball over to the accused. The young offender eventually gave the ball back to the kids and all parties went their separate ways.
After the incident the two 15 year old victims went home and told one of their family members about what had transpired. The family member then told an 18 year old acquaintance who decided to take matters into his own hands setting out to search for the accused. At some point, the father of the adult became involved as well. Both men eventually located the youth in a nearby Tim Hortons. The youth managed to run away but the two men gave chase.
The foot chase lasted several minutes. With his gun visible, and tucked into his waistband, the young offender ran into several nearby businesses asking for help. This resulted in numerous calls to police from concerned citizens. The young offender was eventually caught by both men and a physical altercation ensued. The young offender sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.
The handgun was recovered by police and determined to be a BB gun. The robbery victims sustained no physical injuries.
As a result of his desire for a basketball a 15 year old Milton Youth is facing one count of robbery.
Charged with one count of assault each are an 18 year old male and his 43 year old father, both from Milton. (Names of the adults are not being released to ensure the identity of the young persons , the accused and the victims, are protected)
All parties were released on promise to appears and undertakings.
