The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest late last week of a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman in Vaughan by York Regional Police (YRP).

Preliminary information suggests the following:

• At approximately 8:45 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017, YRP officers located the man and woman exiting the Vaughan Mills shopping centre, near the Toys R Us. There was a warrant out for the arrest of both individuals by the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS).
• During the man’s arrest, there was an interaction with police officers.
• The man was transported to hospital, and then transferred to the custody of NRPS.
• The man was again taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a serious injury.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
