The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit is part of the Ontario Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation. The strategy has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.

The following incidents are not related and different persons were arrested in each incident. Publication bans have been issued by a Justice of the Peace, therefore no additional details can be provided while these matters are before the Court.

Incident 1:

In August of 2017, the Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit received information that an adult individual was communicating with a 14-year old girl from Greater Sudbury via a social media platform in order to facilitate an offence, in this case an Indecent Act.

After executing a number of search warrants, the Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit identified a 30-year old man from Greater Sudbury as being the person responsible.

On November 6, 2017, the man was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Luring a Child – Section 172.1(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Indecent Act – Section 173(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada

The man attended Bail Court on November 7, 2017 to answer to the charges.

Incident 2:

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit identified a Greater Sudbury resident downloading Child Pornography using a file sharing site between August and September of 2017.

On October 31, 2017, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Greater Sudbury and evidence of Child Pornography was found on computers seized from the home.

On November 1, 2017, a 35-year old man from Greater Sudbury was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of Child Pornography – (4 counts) Section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Access Child Pornography  – (3 counts)  Section 163.1(4.1) of the Criminal Code of Canada

The man attended Bail Court on November 1, 2017 to answer to the charges.

Incident 3:

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit identified a Greater Sudbury resident downloading Child Pornography using a file sharing site between March and October of 2017.

On October 17, 2017, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Greater Sudbury and evidence of Child Pornography was found on computers seized from the home.

On November 6, 2017, a 39-year old man from Greater Sudbury was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Access Child Pornography  – (3 counts)  Section 163.1(4.1) of the Criminal Code of Canada

The man attended Bail Court on November 6, 2017, to answer to the charges.
